Why identical shapes can look strikingly different
Two curved pieces sit one above the other. The lower one seems larger-sometimes unmistakably so. Yet both pieces are identical. This is the Jastrow illusion: a compact demonstration that perception depends not only on what we see, but also on what surrounds it.

What Is the Jastrow Illusion?
The Jastrow illusion is a geometric size illusion involving two identical curved figures arranged vertically and slightly offset. In the usual presentation, the lower figure appears longer or larger than the upper one, even though their dimensions match exactly.
The illusion is associated with the Polish-American psychologist Joseph Jastrow, who published the now-famous arrangement in 1892. It is also known as the Wundt–Jastrow illusion, the ring-segment illusion or the boomerang illusion.
Its appeal lies in the conflict it creates: measurement says the shapes are equal, while immediate visual experience insists that they are not.
The Jastrow Illusion Explained Through Comparison
The visual system does not judge each object in complete isolation. It rapidly compares nearby edges, curves and endpoints. In the classic arrangement, the shorter inner curve of one piece lies close to the longer outer curve of the other. That local contrast can make the lower piece appear extended and the upper piece appear compressed.
This comparison happens quickly and automatically. Knowing the answer does not necessarily eliminate the effect: the observer may understand that the pieces are identical and still experience one as larger.

When the shapes are superimposed, their identical dimensions become unmistakable.
Position Changes What You See
The apparent difference belongs to the arrangement rather than to either individual piece. Reverse their positions and the shape moved to the lower position can now appear larger. The object has not changed; the comparison around it has.
This is why the Jastrow illusion is more than a visual curiosity. It reveals that perception is relational. The brain constructs a practical interpretation from contrasts and spatial relationships instead of producing a perfectly neutral measurement of the scene.

What the Illusion Reveals About the Mind
The Jastrow illusion illustrates three important features of perception. First, context is not an optional extra: it helps determine what an object looks like. Second, visual judgement relies on shortcuts that are usually efficient but can be misleading in carefully arranged situations. Third, conscious knowledge and perceptual experience are not the same thing. We can know that two shapes are equal while continuing to see them as unequal.
Research also suggests that the effect is not identical across species. In a computerized comparison study, human adults reliably judged the lower figure as larger, whereas rhesus and capuchin monkeys did not show the same bias. Such findings make the illusion useful for investigating how different visual systems organize contextual information.
The Wider Lesson: Context Quietly Shapes Judgement
The Jastrow illusion should not be stretched into a claim that every human judgement is unreliable. Its more disciplined lesson is that perception is constructed. What appears obvious may partly reflect the frame in which information is presented.
The same principle matters beyond optical illusions. A price can look modest beside a more expensive option. A performance can appear stronger beside a weak comparison. A person can seem unusually confident or hesitant depending on the group around them. These are not all versions of the Jastrow illusion, but they share its central warning: comparison can alter experience without altering the thing being judged.
The shapes stay the same.
The context changes-and perception changes with it.
